CARE IS AT THE VERY HEART OF SINAI HEALTH

Sinai Health is comprised of Mount Sinai Hospital, Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital, Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute and its system partner Circle of Care. It delivers world-class care in the hospital, community and home, focusing on the comprehensive needs of people. Researchers at LTRI discover and translate scientific breakthroughs, push boundaries for health solutions and educate future clinical and scientific leaders. Clinical areas of specialization include rehabilitation and complex continuing care, surgery and oncology, urgent and critical care, and women’s and infants’ health. The LTRI ranks among the top ten biomedical research institutes in the world. Sinai Health is a full affiliate of the University of Toronto.

IF HEALTH CARE IS A
TEAM SPORT,
THEN LTRI’s SCIENTISTS ARE THE GAME CHANGERS

With the health-care system under unprecedented pressure, it’s more important than ever to support the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute’s cutting-edge work, ensuring Sinai Health continues to discover and deliver life-changing care. The LTRI is ranked in the top one per cent globally for molecular and biological research, with a track record of pioneering discoveries and game-changing medical advances. LTRI research breakthroughs, such as the discovery of two new classes of drugs for diabetes, ultimately contribute to the health and well-being of people globally.

By joining Raptors for Research, you will help shape the future of care by supporting the LTRI.

ABOUT THE LTRI

Without our researchers and the well-equipped facilities they work in, Sinai Health cannot make the discoveries that unravel the mysteries of disease and illness and improve outcomes for people around the world. When you walk the halls of the LTRI, you’re standing among those who will shape the future of care. Funding from Sinai Health Foundation is an investment in that future and crucially supports the bright minds of tomorrow in areas of their work such as:

Cancer

Sinai Health scientists are learning how to guide chemotherapy drugs to target cancer cells and leave normal cells unscathed, minimizing the toxic impact on patients’ healthy tissues and reducing the side-effects they experience.

They are exploring how to harness the immune system to identify and attack cancers that would normally be invisible to it. And they are inventing ways to foresee how a tumour will behave, to guide treatment strategies and spare patients from unnecessary and toxic drug therapies.

Diabetes

The Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute is ranked number one in the world for high-impact diabetes research publications, and our scientists are among the most highly cited compared to any other diabetes research program.

LTRI research has led to a number of new treatments for people living with diabetes. For example, breakthroughs include the development of two new classes of drugs that help blood sugar management by improving gut hormone action, which have become transformative in diabetes care today.

Neurodevelopment

Sinai Health’s Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute (LTRI) is an international neuroscience research leader. Our discoveries are forming the basis of new biomarkers, drugs and interventions that will lead to a future where doctors can detect, slow, prevent and reverse brain diseases and damage that can happen at any age.

Our research impacts people with: Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and neurodegeneration; disability resulting from stroke damage; traumatic injury to the brain or spinal cord; multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease and other degenerative neuromuscular disorders; autism and other congenital neurodevelopment diseases; depression, anxiety and mood disorders; and psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia.

Women's and Infants' Health

Sinai Health is home to one of the largest and most advanced women’s and infants’ program in the country. Research supporting the program will lead to better in vitro fertilization outcomes, provide faster diagnosis pain relief for women experiencing pelvic pain, and enhance the care of pregnant women with heart disease, cancer, kidney disease and many other challenging conditions.

For fragile premature babies, we’ve invented and tested a new model of care that includes parents as members of the health-care team and fully prepares them to look after their fragile babies at home. Our approach is proven to help preemies gain weight faster.
