GAME PLAY INFORMATION

Official Team Roster

add remove

Teams must have an appointed Team Captain and all participants fully registered, including registration fees paid, by February 19, 2024 in order to participate in the event. Minimum 3 team members required to play.

Liability Waiver

add remove

Each team member must complete their digital liability waiver by February 25, 2024 or they will be disqualified from the tournament. The waiver can be found in their Dashboard.

Sportsmanship

add remove

Good sportsmanship and the spirit of fair play is to prevail at all times. Team captains will be held responsible for the conduct of themselves, their players, and their spectators. Disqualification from a game or the tournament may be enforced for unsporting behaviour, verbal intimidation by players or spectators, or fighting.

Advancement & Tiebreakers (How to Win)

add remove

The winning team will be determined by its’ win-loss record (ranking will be based on total points: 4 points for a win, 2 for a tie, 0 for a loss). For teams that are tied in record after pool play, ties will be broken using scores in each game: Point Differential (max +/- 10 points)

In the event that the top (1st or 2nd) performing teams are the top two fundraising teams, by default the third and/or fourth place performing teams will earn a spot in the finals.

3-ON-3 BASKETBALL RULES

The International Basketball Federation rules apply to game play if not modified within. Raptors for Research following rules have been designed to ensure fair play for all participants.  Each player is expected to understand these rules prior to participating.

Game Duration

add remove

Games consist of one 10-minute period with a running clock. A coin flip shall determine which team gets first possession. There will be no overtime period and games can end in a tie. There are no timeouts and the game clock does not stop in 3-on-3 games. Each team will play four games each.

Number of Players

add remove

All games will be played 3-on-3 with substitutions available throughout the games.

Substitutions

add remove

Substitutions are allowed only during dead balls and are determined by players.

Scoring

add remove

Every shot inside the arc, including free throws, will count as 1 point. A successful shot from behind the arc will be awarded 2 points.

After Made Baskets

add remove

The ball will change possession after all made baskets and free throws, no “make it, take it.”

Change of Possession

add remove

After EVERY change of possession, including defensive rebounds, steals and air-balls, the ball must be taken back. “Taken back” or “cleared” means player with possession of the ball must have both feet clearly behind the 2-point arc. After the ball has been taken back or cleared, play is “live” meaning the player with possession of the ball does not have to pass the ball in to initiate play. Failure to take it back will result in the loss of possession and the loss of any points resulting from that possession. A violation occurs only when a shot is attempted prior to taking the ball behind the 20-foot arc. If a shot is attempted prior to taking the ball back and the player is fouled, the foul does not count and the ball changes possession.

Dead Ball - Checked In

add remove

After EVERY dead ball situation (including made baskets, violations, out of bounds, fouls), the offensive player with possession of the ball MUST start out completely behind the 2-point arc. Once the ball is checked to the offense by the defense, the offensive player can dribble, pass or shoot.

Stalling

add remove

Stalling or failing to play actively by attempting to score within 30 seconds will be a violation.

Jump Balls

add remove

All jump balls are awarded to the defense.

Team Fouls & Penalty

add remove

A team is in the penalty when it has committed 4 fouls within a period. Non-shooting fouls under penalty foul situations will be awarded 1 free-throw. After a free throw is made or missed, the ball goes to the other team at the top of the court and must be checked by the defense.

Shooting Fouls & Free Throws

add remove

Fouls during the act of shooting inside the arc will be awarded 1 free throw. Fouls during the act of shooting behind the arc will be awarded 2 free throws. If a player is fouled in the act of shooting and the field goal is successful, the shooter shall be awarded 1 additional free throw. After a free throw is made or missed, the ball goes to the other team at the top of the court and must be checked by the defense.

Technical Fouls

add remove

Unsporting behavior and/or intentional fouls will result in a technical foul. A technical foul counts towards a player's disqualification and team fouls. Penalty for a technical foul is 1 free throw for the offended team and possession of the ball. Two technical fouls will result in the player's disqualification from the game.

Flagrant Fouls/Fighting

add remove

Flagrant fouls, fighting and continuous misconduct will result in ejection from the game and may result from removal from the tournament. Penalty for a technical foul is 1 free throw for the offending team and possession of the ball.

Total Points Against

add remove

If two teams are tied and played against each other then head-to-head results will apply. If teams are still tied after all point tiebreakers, the team with the most fundraising dollars will be crowned the Raptors for Research 3x3 Tournament winner.

Forfeits

add remove

Teams are given three minutes after the start of their scheduled game time before a forfeit is issued by the referee.  The Tournament Director has the option to replay a forfeited game if deemed necessary. If a forfeit occurs, the winning team will receive max points in point differential used in breaking ties.
